CHICKASAW COUNTY - Local city police along with the county Sheriff's Dept. are warning citizens to be aware of their surroundings and take special precautions for safety during the upcoming holiday season.

A robbery of an Okolona convenience store recently underscored the seriousness of safety.

On Thursday, Nov. 13, the Whitt's #2 store on Hwy. 47 east was robbed by two males wearing masks. Two store employees were taken to the back of the store and restrained with duct-tape while the men took an undetermined amount of money. The armed suspects shot a security camera, but some film was recovered and has been sent to the crime lab for enhancement.

A third employee freed the other two after the suspects left and called for assistance. Okolona PD and the Chickasaw County Sheriff's Dept. were both on the scene and are investigating.

Deputy Jim Meyers said that citizens need to keep their ears and eyes open at all times.

"If you see anything out of the ordinary, be sure to call us," Meyers said. "People just need to be extra careful through the holiday season."

Houston Police Chief, Billy Voyles, agreed asking citizens to take care while out in public and shopping.

"Don't leave your purse in the shopping cart," Voyles said. "You can turn around for just a second and it will be gone."

Voyles said that his department will have personnel on site in local stores to watch for criminal activity and to help keep citizens safe.

"This economy is so bad and people need to be extra careful during the holidays," Voyles said.
