Councilwoman dies

- Okolona City Councilwoman, Peggy Carson, died Friday, April 24 at her home in Okolona. Carson served on the City Council representing Ward 2. She was a candidate for reelection and was running as an Independent at the time of her death. She was challenged by Bennett Moore, who will appear on the primary ballot as a Democratic candidate.

Summer donations needed

- The Salvation Army Thrift Store and Service Center is requesting donations of summer clothing to help support the facilities projects in the community. The Service Center provided emergency clothing, food and assistance with utilities to those in need throughout the year and the Thrift Store provides much of the funding for everyday needs.

Space in the Thrift Store is limited and fall and winter clothing cannot be stored until the seasons change. The staff is asking citizens to look through their spring and summer closets and donate any unneeded items. Donations may be dropped off at the back door of the facility on Washington Street behind the Post Office during working hours. Staff requests that donations not be dropped off while the facility is closed to prevent theft.

Groundbreaking set for May 13

- The official groundbreaking ceremony for the new Regional Correctional Facility in Houston will be held Wednesday, May 13 at 10 a.m. The facility will be located in the Industrial Park in Houston and will house up to 300 medium security State inmates. The new facility is expected to bring about 40 full-time and up to 20 part-time jobs into the county in several different fields.

All interested persons are invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony.
