Local student dies in auto accident
- A local teen was killed Monday, April 13 in a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Hwy. 15 and CR 405 (Thorn Road) just west of Houston. LaMarcus King was the driver of a van and apparently pulled out in front of a Calhoun Health Service ambulance that was returning from a call. King was pronounced dead at the scene while his mother, Mattie Banks, was airlifted to North Mississippi Medical Center. At last report, Banks was listed in stable condition.
King was originally from the New Albany area and transferred to the Houston School district. He attended Houston Middle School and was in his freshman year at Houston High School at the time of his death.
A memorial service for King was held Friday, April 17 at Second Baptist Church in Houston. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 18 at Serenity Funeral Home in New Albany.
A fund to assist the family has been opened at BancorpSouth. Anyone who wishes to contribute may contact BancorpSouth regarding the LaMarcus King account.
Retirement reception April 26
- A reception honoring Mr. Willie McVay for his 20 years of dedicated service as the caretaker of Camp Tik-A-Witha in Van Vleet will be held April 26 from 2-4 p.m. at the camp. All are invited to attend. Refreshments will be served.
Grant cycle open
- PACE 2009 grant cycle is now open until June 15, 2009. Any non-profit organization is invited to apply for a grant. Applications can be picked up at the Byrne CPA Firm in Houston or by calling Hope Stantz at 447-0157.
