STARKVILLE - Mississippi State's program for prospective students considering the study of architecture and interior design will be held June 12-19.

The 2009 Design Discovery camp is offered annually on a first-come basis by the School of Architecture, a part of the university's College of Architecture, Art, and Design.

The popular weeklong program was created more than two decades ago specifically for students ages 16 and older or incoming MSU freshmen with an interest in architecture or interior design. It is among the oldest such preparatory programs of its kind in the U.S.

June 1 is this year's registration deadline.

"Design Discovery was created to simulate the information, skill and intensity required for a design education," said director Michael Berk. "Consistently, students say the experience helped them make informed career decisions about architecture and its related disciplines."

Berk, the college's F.L. Crane Endowed Professor of Architecture, said Design Discovery traditionally coincides with two of MSU's freshman orientation sessions. Since they will be enrolling during orientation, incoming freshmen strongly are encouraged to attend both the camp and one of the two summer orientation sessions, he emphasized.

A downloadable application brochure and additional information may be accessed at www.caad.msstate.edu/designdiscovery2009.

The total camp cost of $595 includes a $100 non-refundable application processing fee. A limited number of camp scholarships are available to students who either reside in Leflore County or are members of a minority under-represented in higher education.
