OKOLONA - Fire departments from Okolona and nearby communities battled a furniture plant fire Friday that authorities say temporarily closed a portion of Mississippi Highway 41.

There were no reports of injuries in the blaze but Okolona Mayor Sherman Carouthers said the city's fire chief apparently suffered a minor injury at the scene.

Richie Child, with the city's street and water department, said 30 to 35 workers were employed at L&L Furniture, located in part of the old Rose Hill Furniture Co. facility. He said L&L, along with areas of the building being used as a warehouse, were destroyed.

The building is located on south Childs Street inside the city limits of the town of about 3,000 people.
