November tax returns tumble

Sales were down almost universally in Twin County, with only a couple of municipalities managing to best last November's numbers.

Vardaman was the big winner, gaining $1,250 for the month, an increase of 14 percent over November 2007.

Only two other towns managed increases in November. Bruce rebounded from a couple of off months to gain about $650 over last November; while Woodland gained a little more than $200, one of the few increases for the Chickasaw County town recently.

Houston and Calhoun City each declined about $1,000 for the month. The biggest percentage drop was Pittsboro's, which was near 30 percent. Slate Springs lost more than 20 percent, and Big Creek's decline was about 20 percent.

Rounded results for each town:

- Big Creek - Down $200 for the month, up $500 for the year.

- Bruce - Up $650 for the month, down $5,000 for the year.

- Calhoun City - Down $1,000 for the month, up $9,500 for the year.

- Derma - Down $600 for the month, up $1,600 for the year.

- Houlka - Down $1,600 for the month, down $5,000 for the year.

- Houston - Down $1,000 for the month, down $4,000 for the year.

- Mantee - Down $300 for the month, up $600 for the year.

- Okolona - Down $160 for the month, down $5,000 for the year.

- Pittsboro - Down $200 for the month, down $140 for the year.

- Slate Springs - Down $120 for the month, up $200 for the year.

- Vardaman - Up $1,250 for the month, up $4,000 for the year.

- Woodland - Up $200 for the month, down $4,500 for the year.
