HOULKA- The City Square in New Houlka has a new addition gracing its lawn. A gazebo was donated and placed on the square for public use by the organizers, supporters and participating churches of “The Jesus Thang.”
The Jesus Thang began in 1999, when members of Houlka United Methodist, Schooner Valley Baptist, First Baptist and His Grace Ministries joined in a ministry to share their belief in Jesus Christ with the local community. They invited the public to the square for free concessions, gospel music, fun and games and children’s activities.
As the event grew and incorporated visitors and guests from surrounding areas, it outgrew the sponsorships and available hands to organize and maintain it. The Jesus Thang was suspended in 2008 and organizers began a new quest to create a lasting memorial on the City Square for use by all.
The new gazebo was commissioned from the Amish community in South Pontotoc county and was donated to the town and its citizens this spring. It is available for public use and will have its first official event on July 5 at 2 p.m. as the aldermen of New Houlka are sworn in.
