HOUSTON - The Houston Community Theatre performed the play, "Li'l Abner" to a large crowd on Nov. 7 and showed off the newest renovations to the Houston High School auditorium.
"The auditorium, with its new curtains, modern sound and lighting systems, plus those wonderful plush theatre seats made the production of "Li'l Abner" a joy to watch," said Director Janet Coker. "So many people commented on the quality of the production and the incredible music."
The HCT first staged the play in 2004 and reprised it with many of the same actors in place.
"The cast members from the 2004 production were just as funny and astounding as they were five years ago," Coker said.
A few new faces to the stage received great reviews as well. Molly May and Nolen Hood, both students at HHS took over the lead roles of Daisy Mae and Abner this year.
"They brought a lot of energy and excitement to the roles. A.J. Johnson's appearance as the rejuvenated 'puny government man,' brought down the house at all performances."
The production was enjoyed by students on Nov. 6 and was presented for the general public on Nov. 7 and both showing drew large crowds in the 500-seat auditorium.
"We only had a few seats left," Coker said.
The HCT was founded through a 21st Century grant that paid for improvements and renovations to the HHS auditorium. As the grant has run out, the group is determined to continue on with performing. They are planning a beauty review combined with musical entertainment for later this winter.
"It will be similar to last spring's 'Dreamgirls'." Coker said. "We are planning to use a 'Grease' or 'Footloose' theme this time."
Currently the group is seeking sponsors in the local community to assist them with productions.
"We are running on our capital and certainly appreciate donations," Coker said.
