HOUSTON - The annual Salvation Army Kettle Campaign will kick off soon with a goal of helping those less fortunate, not only during the holiday season but throughout the year.

"This is the largest fundraiser that is put on by the Salvation Army," said Service Center Director Tricia Finn. "It not only helps families through the Christmas season, but carries us through the first of the year when funds are tight."

The money raised through the Kettle Campaign helped to assist almost 300 families in need in 2009.

"During the regular year, we provided utility assistance to 166 families and food assistance to 116 families," Finn said. "We assisted nine families due to house fires and also gave out 3,069 articles of clothing. So, you see, we are not just a Christmas program. We help needy families all year long."

Finn has found solid support in Chickasaw County for the Kettle Campaign through school, civic and church groups, as well as individuals willing to give of their time, and hopes for the same this year.

Two-hour bell ringing shifts are available and the campaign will begin on Nov. 23 at Grocer's Pride Supermarket and Nov. 27 at Wal-Mart. The campaign relies on volunteer support to keep the donations in line toward those in need.

"I would like to thank the people of Houston and the surrounding communities for all that they do to support the Salvation Army," Finn said. "The donations that you provide for the Thrift Store and the time and money you donate make our community one of the most giving in this area."
